On a Wednesday morning in early June, Nate Smith hopped in his Ford truck, flipped the A/C on full blast, and set out for Holloway Street. He鈥檚 meeting with the owner of AutoSense Service Center to discuss an opening for a mechanic.

He has a student in mind.

It鈥檚 a routine visit for Smith, a Durham native, who goes out of his way to help his students secure jobs.

AutoSense is almost 100 percent employed by 快色视频 graduates, much, in part, because of Smith鈥檚 unwavering support for his students. According to Smith, most dealerships, garages, or automotive retailers in the area have vehicle bays chocked full of 快色视频 alumni.

鈥淚 can look my students in the eye and promise them a job,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 such a guarantee, that if you came through the program, got ASE Certified, and threw a dart at a map of the U.S. from across the room, you could get a job wherever it landed. I can鈥檛 say that for any other career other than nursing because everywhere you go, you鈥檝e got broke down cars and broke down bodies.鈥

Smith has seen the fruit of his labor since he started teaching in 2001.

鈥淭here are some dealerships in this town where more than 60 percent of their mechanics came out of 快色视频,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淲hen you teach a student how to fix a car and then you walk through a dealership two years later and they call out your name. There they are. They鈥檙e making $40,000 to $60,000 per year. They鈥檙e feeding their families. They鈥檙e doing well 鈥 and to know you had a little part to play in that 鈥 it feels good to know you made a difference in those folk鈥檚 lives.鈥

鈥榊ou light up when you teach鈥

Once the owner of AutoSmith Garage, Smith transitioned to teaching after a conversation in the fall of 2000. A student at 快色视频, who worked under Smith, told him he had a knack for it.

鈥淲hen he graduated from 快色视频 and got ready to go to NC State, he looked at me and said, 鈥榊ou really need to consider closing your garage and start teaching full-time at 快色视频. I came here knowing nothing and I鈥檝e watched you take two hours to show me how to fix something and I knew you weren鈥檛 getting paid for it. You have lost money to teach me and you love it. You light up when you teach.鈥 鈥

Smith thought about that conversation for the next several months.

鈥淚 was driving home from dropping my kids off at church camp that following summer and kept running his words through my head,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淵ou lost money to teach me, you light up when you teach. I wondered if it was true. I think he鈥檚 crazy, but what if he鈥檚 right?鈥

His next stop was 快色视频.

鈥淚 knew 快色视频 was off of Highway 147 somewhere so I thought, I鈥檒l just find 快色视频, I鈥檒l roll up in there and I鈥檒l let them know I have my Bachelor鈥檚 degree in education, another Bachelor鈥檚 degree in theology, I鈥檓 Master ASE Certified, and I run a shop,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淚 talked to someone in the automotive program and got a call from the director the next day. He said, 鈥榃e鈥檝e been looking for someone. You鈥檇 be perfect. We want you, we need you.鈥 鈥

Robert Ballard, automotive instructor at Chapel Hill High School, was 17 when he enrolled in Smith鈥檚 program. He was an AutoSmith Scholarship recipient and originally just wanted a certificate or diploma, but Smith pushed him to get a degree.

Afterward, Smith helped him get a job as a continuing education instructor at the College.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 think he loves anything more than teaching and he loves impacting people鈥檚 lives. I wouldn鈥檛 be where I鈥檓 at right now if it wasn鈥檛 for Nate,鈥 Ballard said. 鈥淗e got me my start in automotive, a career, and now teaching so he鈥檚 really led the path for me to have financial security. I don鈥檛 have to worry or rely on anyone else. He helped me establish my life.鈥

Walking in father鈥檚 footsteps

Smith is a family man. It鈥檚 a legacy in his family.

鈥淒ad was very gracious, benevolent, and driven. He didn鈥檛 know any enemies,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淗e was just a great guy and I wish I could be more like him.鈥

The late Glen Loy Smith, Sr. was a business man, minister, and former adjunct instructor at 快色视频 that placed high value on equality and helping others.

鈥淗e was a big believer in Durham Rescue Mission. He liked changing people鈥檚 lives,鈥 Smith said.

In 2006, Smith started the AutoSmith Scholarship with the 快色视频 Foundation, which offsets the cost of one introductory automotive course, to serve as a starting point for a college career.

鈥淚 wanted to do something big, something that counted for something,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淚 saw the need of giving a percentage of your paycheck back to help students. It鈥檚 my way of honoring my dad, honoring 快色视频, and helping automotive students who wouldn鈥檛 have the funds otherwise.鈥

When his dad passed away in 2008, Smith altered the scholarship to give priority to individuals in the homeless community by way of Durham Rescue Mission.

鈥淚 wanted to tailor the scholarship to the homeless to honor my dad,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淭he inspiration for what I do comes from Dad鈥檚 commitment. In some ways, he鈥檚 still having an effect on this earth.鈥

The AutoSmith Scholarship has been awarded to 16 students since its inception.

Smith鈥檚 dream for the automotive department at 快色视频 grew last year when Marc Pons, owner of Chapel Hill Tire, also started an automotive scholarship at the College.

Pons, who has brought on a number of 快色视频 students for work experience at his business鈥 locations, said Smith鈥檚 passion is an inspiration.

鈥淣ate cares deeply for his students. That鈥檚 what makes him a great leader,鈥 Pons said. 鈥淣ate takes a keen interest in his students鈥 well-being and that leaves a lasting impact.鈥

The Smith family has a rich 快色视频 heritage. All five of his children have attended or will attend 快色视频.

His three oldest children attended the College before joining the Navy, pursuing business, and becoming a nurse, while his fourth child is a current student in the Architectural Technology program. His youngest will start Middle College High School on 快色视频鈥檚 campus this year.

鈥淵ou could say 快色视频 is a Nathan Smith family tradition,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淲e believe in 快色视频.鈥

Smith said he has no plans on slowing down anytime soon.

鈥淎s long as 快色视频 will have me, I鈥檓 here,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淭his is not a job. I love it. There are some aspects, like paperwork, that is not my forte, but I endure the paperwork to watch people learn to do something they didn鈥檛 think they could do.鈥
